What can I expect from a first session? 

Generally in the first child psychology session, your therapist will want to meet with the parents or other carers to discuss the nature of the concerns. This is particularly the case where the child involved is too young to articulate these themselves. The child's first session with the therapist may be with a carer present or alone depending on their level of comfort with this. When working with the children we use a variety of different medium such as drawing and play therapy, which provide opportunities for children to explore different ways to manage their difficult thoughts, feelings or behaviours. Ultimately, the aim of children's counselling is to get your child to a point in life where they are moving forward and feeling good about themselves and their relationships.

Each counselling session is private and confidential. The information gathered during your visits is for the purposes of assessment, diagnosis and treatment, which will help us provide you with the best possible support. As set out by the APS Code of Ethics, limitations to this confidentiality apply if there is an immediate or specified risk of harm to an identifiable person's safety, or if a client's file is subpoenaed by a court of law.
